What the cut is and where the name comes from
Legend has it the local name appeared after the 1972 Summit Series: that’s how the Canadian hockey players wore their hair, and the look spread fast. Technically it’s a cut that shortens gradually from the fringe to the nape: 4–5 cm stay at the front for volume, while the sides and back are kept short.
In Western barbering it’s known as the Ivy League: the same idea of “short, but with a front you can actually style”.
Who the kanadka suits
The kanadka is the most forgiving of the classic cuts:
- it suits any face shape — the volume at the front balances proportions easily;
- it works with straight, wavy and even thinning hair;
- it fits any dress code — from school to the office.
Styling and care
The quickest styling is lifting the front up and slightly to the side with a blow-dryer, then setting it with a dab of paste or wax. Even unstyled, the cut looks tidy — which is why men who can’t be bothered with their hair love it. A refresh every 4–6 weeks is enough.
