What is an undercut
An undercut is a haircut built on sharp contrast: the sides and back are cut to one short length (or shaved), while the top stays noticeably longer. Unlike a fade, there is no gradual blending — the line between lengths is clearly visible.
That contrast is what makes the cut so striking: it holds its shape equally well with a formal look and with everyday style.
Who the undercut suits
The undercut is fairly universal, but it works best when:
- your hair is straight or slightly wavy and at least medium-thick;
- you can spend a few minutes styling in the morning — the long top doesn’t sit on its own;
- you want a cut that is easy to vary: the same undercut can be styled back, to the side or with natural texture.
How to style an undercut
The classic move is combing the top back with pomade or wax — neat with a touch of retro. For a calmer everyday look, blow-dry the hair to the side and set it with matte paste. If you like a messy texture, warm a little clay between your palms and shape the strands with your fingers.
Refresh the contrast every 3–4 weeks: as the short part grows out, the line loses its sharpness.
